Record the clear floor dimensions, ceiling height, access doors, cyc or backdrop, rigging points and distance needed behind camera. Ask whether the studio is sound-treated or merely quiet, and listen for roads, aircraft, lifts and neighbouring units at the proposed time. Confirm available power and distribution rules with the lighting team. Large stages still fail a production when props cannot enter or the lens cannot achieve the required distance.
Plan makeup, wardrobe, green rooms, client viewing, catering, equipment storage and waste as well as the set. Check parking and loading bookings, goods lifts and overtime terms. Identify what grip, lighting, blackout and production furniture is included and who may operate installed systems. Share any smoke, water, animals, vehicles, weapons or high-load effects for written approval and risk assessment long before call time.
For the London listings shown here, hourly hire ranges from £31 to £337/hour and a typical listed hourly price is around £87/hour. Prices vary by date, time, facilities and booking rules, so compare the live price information on each listing before booking.
Not necessarily. Ask whether the stage is acoustically treated or certified for sync sound, and perform a recce at a similar time to the planned recording.
Usually, subject to loading, power, insurance and rigging rules. Give the studio an equipment and crew list so access, electrical and storage needs can be approved.
